Personal finance affects important decisions, so we explain how we write our guides and build our calculators.
How we write our guides
- We start from official sources whenever they exist: the Spanish Tax Agency (Agencia Tributaria), the Bank of Spain (Banco de España) and the Deposit Guarantee Fund (Fondo de Garantía de Depósitos).
- We cross-check figures. When we cannot consult the official source, we use reliable secondary sources and say so in the “Sources” section of each article.
- We check the arithmetic of our examples against the standard formulas for each case.
- We show the date each guide was last reviewed.
- We correct the errors that readers report.
Main sources
- Agencia Tributaria: thresholds for filing Spanish income tax (IRPF) and tax rules.
- Banco de España, Bank Customer Portal: mortgages and loan costs.
- Fondo de Garantía de Depósitos: protection of bank deposits.
How the tools calculate
- VAT calculator: to add VAT, total = net price × (1 + rate); to remove it, net price = total ÷ (1 + rate).
- Mortgage calculator: constant payment using the French amortisation system, without fees, insurance or costs.
- Compound interest calculator: converts the annual return into an equivalent monthly rate and adds the contributions at the end of each month, without deducting taxes, fees or inflation.
Limitations
Results are estimates and do not replace advice from a professional. Our content refers to Spain’s common tax regime; the Basque Country and Navarre have their own regional (foral) rules. Many guides use euros and Spanish figures, so check the rules in your own country if you live elsewhere.
